The ESVS strives to relieve sickness and to preserve and protect health by advancing, for the public benefit, the science art and research into vascular disease, including vascular surgery.

Vision & Mission
Our mission is to become a leader in promoting optimal care for patients with vascular disease by:
  • Supporting high quality research
  • Providing educational opportunities
  • Organizing meetings, seminars, lectures and conferences
  • Commissioning and publishing guidelines
  • Sponsoring the European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
  • Promoting dialogue with National Societies and others involved in the treatment of vascular disease
  • Advising Regulatory Authorities on matters relating to vascular disease
Governance
The ESVS gathers 2,400 members including 72% surgeons and 27% trainees. 86% of the membership comes from Europe. Members are medical specialists involved in the care and treatment of patients suffering from vascular disease. They meet in an Annual General Meeting (AGM). Members receive benefits against an annual membership fee.

The Society’s governing body is the Council. Councillors are elected representatives from each European country that has more than 10 members. Council meets twice a year: at the ESVS Annual Meeting (usually just before the scientific meeting starts) and in connection with the Charing Cross meeting in London, in April.

The ESVS Executive Committee is elected by the Council in order to manage day-to-day operations of the Society. The Executive Committee is composed of 8 members: the President, the Secretary General, the Treasurer, the Past President, the President Elect, the EJVES Editor in Chief, the EJVES Senior Editor and the Education & Training Committee Chair. The ExCo meets approximately four times a year to discuss all issues related to the running of the Society including strategic priorities, activities, finances, communications, marketing, administration, etc.

History
The European Society for Vascular Surgery was founded and inaugurated on May 6, 1987 in London. This inaugural meeting was attended by Presidents or Representatives of almost all the National Vascular Societies in Europe, who supported the formation and aims of the ESVS. The Officers and Members of the Council were proposed and elected, ensuring a satisfactory representation from various European countries. It was further agreed that the Society would generally meet in September each year. The Society has grown enormously since and has now over 2000 members, mostly European, but many from other parts of the world.
